Frequently asked questions
Where circumstances vary, we say so. Nothing here is regulatory guidance — every participant's plan, authorizations, and situation is different.
Section 01
Who does Clairo serve?
Clairo Care serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families — in Maryland through the DDA and in Pennsylvania through ODP. Families in traditional agency-based services, families who self-direct, and families new to DDA services are all welcome to reach out.
What services does Clairo offer?
Personal Supports, Personal Supports Enhanced, Community Development Services, and Nursing Supports. Which services a participant can receive depends on their plan and authorizations.
How do I know whether Clairo may be a fit?
The honest answer is that it depends on the participant's plan, services, authorizations, caregivers, and priorities. The fastest way to find out is a conversation — and if Clairo isn't the right fit, we'll say so.
What does the transition process involve?
Roughly six steps: a conversation, a review of services and authorizations, building the care team, onboarding caregivers, coordinating the transition, and starting services. Most of the work sits with us.
Section 02
Can I choose my caregiver?
Participants and families are actively involved in deciding who joins the care team. Clairo does not simply assign staff and inform you afterward.
Can my current caregiver work for Clairo?
Often, yes. An existing caregiver can apply to become a Clairo employee, subject to service requirements, qualifications, onboarding, DDA rules, and the participant's individual circumstances.
Can a family member work through Clairo?
Where DDA rules permit, qualified family members and friends may be able to provide support as Clairo employees. Eligibility depends on the service and applicable requirements.
What does Clairo pay?
Our current materials show Personal Supports at $32.50–$35.50/hr and Community Development Services at $40+/hr possible. Wages vary by service, participant circumstances, available service funding, and employee eligibility.
Is mileage reimbursed?
Yes — eligible travel is reimbursed for Clairo caregivers.
Are benefits available?
Health benefits and paid time off are available for eligible caregivers under the applicable plan terms.
Section 03
How is Clairo different?
Clairo is a provider agency, with the same professional infrastructure — payroll, compliance, billing, training. The difference is that families and participants stay involved in choosing who provides care, and the model is structured to direct more funding to caregiver compensation.
Does Clairo assign caregivers?
We help build the care team with you. Where a participant already has someone they trust, that person can often apply to work through Clairo.
Does Clairo handle payroll and compliance?
Yes. For services Clairo delivers, Clairo handles employment, payroll, taxes, training, timekeeping, billing, and compliance.
Section 04
Is Clairo SDS?
No. Clairo is a provider agency for the services Clairo delivers — not Self-Directed Services. Our model is designed to preserve many of the things families value in self-direction, such as caregiver choice and strong compensation, while Clairo carries the provider administration.
Do I have to leave SDS completely?
Not necessarily. Depending on the participant's plan, services, authorizations, and DDA requirements, selected services may be delivered by Clairo while other applicable services remain self-directed.
Can selected services move to Clairo?
In many cases yes, but it depends on the specific services and authorizations in the participant's plan. This is exactly the kind of thing to walk through with us and your coordinator.
Can my current SDS caregivers work for Clairo?
Often they can apply to become Clairo employees for services Clairo delivers, subject to qualifications, onboarding, and applicable requirements.
Who controls my SDS employer budget?
You do. Clairo is funded as a provider agency for the services Clairo delivers and does not control a participant's self-directed employer budget.
Answers describe how Clairo generally operates. Eligibility, wages, services, and what can move to a provider agency all depend on the participant's plan, authorizations, applicable DDA or ODP requirements, and individual circumstances. Clairo is funded as a provider agency for the services Clairo delivers and does not control a participant's self-directed employer budget.
